Racism in Othello Updated: Nov 10, 2020 In my review of the production at the Globe Theatre in the autumn of 2018, I posited the theory that Othello is not essentially about Race, per se, despite the fact that Shakespeare sets the eponymous figure apart as a black man in an otherwise exclusively white dramatis personae.

Racism in Othello Racism seems to be a big concern in Shakespeare’s tragic play, Othello. Because the hero of the play is an outsider, a Moor, we have an idea how blacks were regarded in England, in Elizabethan times. There are many references that bring about the issue of racism from the very beginning to the end.

In the play, Iago provokes Brabantio regarding his daughter Desdemona’s elopement with Othello by saying that “ an old black ram is tupping your white ewe. ” It is the very first outrightly racist remark in this play by Shakespeare. Absurdly, Othello is accused of corrupting Desdemona with magic, witchcraft and foul potions. More important, the senators of Venice entertain this accusation as a legitimate possibility. It is only when Desdemona testifies, quite bravely, that Othello is exonerated. This is the world Othello finds himself in.
